"you older missionaries"

Tuesday, May 28, 2013

First of all, transfer calls!

Elder B is being transferred to... *drumroll*.... Preston Idaho.  He's going home!
Elder C is being transferred to... Eatonville, in the Graham Zone!  (which means, effective June 26, he will be part of the Federal Way Mission)

Elder Z is staying in Bremerton
And Elder Lonas is......... staying in Bremerton!

I'm down to stay again, but this is way long.  But I have 2 people here I need to baptize still.  There are a lot of others we should hopefully baptize in the next 6 weeks as well, but there are 2 that I feel like I was sent here for.  I think its very, very important that I do that. Once I do, I can go somewhere else.

Also, when President is talking to me, he keeps making references to "you older missionaries", and I keep checking over my shoulder to see who he is referring to. Today is my 17th month mark, and before the end of this transfer I'll be 18.  That's just 6 months, or 4 transfers left, and really a little bit less because of the transfer cycle dates.

Our weekend was really... really, really rough.  We had 4 baptisms fall through for lame reasons, my favorite investigator didn't come to church for a lame reason, and because we were trying to get her to church I missed the sacrament for the first time in...... a really long time.

My new companion Elder F is apparently way into working out, so we're gonna get gym memberships, that will be fun.  And he's way good at scriptures, I hear.   And he and  I are getting a baby boy (a new missionary to train), so that'll be fun!  I'll meet him in a couple hours.

"I'm happy, I'm exhausted, I'm happy."

Monday, May 20, 2013

This week was great :)

Tyler  was baptized and it was awesome!  He was so pumped up and excited about it, I wish you all could see his face as he came up out of the water, it was the best :)  He is way excited about sharing the gospel with his family, too. So far his family hasn't been too involved either way, if anything probably a little less than happy about his decision to be baptized, but he is confident that they'll want what he has- I think he's right :)

He was confirmed yesterday in church, and I was SO impressed with some of our ward members. We tend to have the hardest time motivating members to reach out and be friendly to people we bring to church, and new members.  And its not that they don't mean to be friendly, but it's like this solitary attitude permeates the atmosphere in Bremerton.  People just don't seem to know their neighbors, they just don't socialize.
BUT people were way friendly and welcoming, and one member even invited him over to dinner that very night :)

We had one of our investigators, Charles, attend the baptism.  He almost was baptized like....4 months ago, but then backed off a lot and has just been taking things really slow.  He's seemed pretty committed recently, but has been having the hardest time living the word of wisdom.  The other day we helped him break 3 packs of cigarettes, which is great :) but then he fell off the wagon again.  After that he seemed close to giving up, and just not worrying about it, but we asked him what he thought right after the baptism, and he said,  "Man.... I gotta quit smoking"

Then he texted us at like 1 or 2 in the morning last night, and was like "Guys I've been thinking a lot about baptism and the Church, and from what it seems to me, [side note, this is the 2nd time in the past 2 weeks that people he knows have been baptized] that once you're baptized you have a lot of extra strength in overcoming things, and you have an immediate support system from the church to help you"

How cool is that?!?

Church this week was just great, and by great I mean exhausting.  I forgot, but just remembered that I had to babysit these 3 kids and keep them quiet during sacrament meeting, because their mom was at church for the first time in like 4 years and had no clue how to handle them.  Playing Book of Mormon picture games turned out to be the answer.

I love Sacrament meeting so much.  The spirit is so strong, no matter what else is going on.  Also, my friend, former Sister Grenfell, along with her boyfriend former Elder Alden, came to visit, so that was crazy seeing them :)
Oh, and we sang in church, us missionaries and the priests.  Very scary since some of us are very tone deaf, but it turned out ok.

Ooh, and we had the first of our new sets of firesides yesterday!  The musical group I'm in is doing "More Holiness Give Me".  It's pretty much the coolest arrangement of the song I've ever heard.  It's also one of the hardest choral things I've ever sung (not saying a lot, but still) but we had a really strong group and it sounded so so nice :)  Goodness, I love firesides. The seating arrangements turned out pretty cool too, I got to sit by one of my close buddies for the whole thing, so that was fun!  They are just so powerful, I wish I could bottle it up and give it to people on doorsteps,  and also take it home. I'm gonna miss them

Very short on time, Sorry I never can convey a decent percentage of a week, but I'll just say that I'm happy, I'm exhausted, I'm happy.  That was a good sentence.

Love,
Lonas

Baptism in Puget Sound

Well, this will be a pretty short email home.  Admittedly, it will be 100% my fault, because I wasnt focusing, and now I'm out of time.
Welllllllllllllll....
I got to call home yesterday!  That was nice :)
This week we had the baptism of Sally! It was my first baptism at a location other than a baptismal font  We were at the Puget Sound and it was GREAT!  She was confirmed this Sunday and is doing awesome.
That wasn't very descriptive I realize, but you can use your imagination to fill in all sorts of details, which could potentially be accurate.
Love,
Lonas
A woman who was there texted me this picture, so we DO get a visual aid!
If you don't know Chase, he's that darling boy second from the right. :)

"There's no shortcut..."

I think when I come home I'll have a very hard time adjusting to being called by my first name.  Maybe everyone can keep calling me Lonas for awhile, to help me ease into it?
We went to the temple this week.  Every day leading up to the temple I became more and more excited, which was manifested by a neverending round of me singing "Going to the temple and we're, gonna get ma-a-a-ried, going to the temple and we're gonna get ma-a-a-ried. Gee.  I really love you and we're gonna get ma-a-a-rieed... Going to the temple, *mumble lyrics so no one knows that I don't know them*"
(Sidenote: I did not get married.  But it wasn't a complete failure or anything, the temple was still awesome :)
My companions are very grateful that that is over.
Also, if anyone knows the real lyrics (besides chapel- I am aware that the real lyrics say chapel ) please let me know.    DONE. :)
I love the temple.
We had to split the Mission into 3 groups, each going on a different day, because we have so many more missionaries than last year, which was too bad because I wasn't there with some of my friends, but I was there with some of my close friends that I was with LAST year when I went to the temple :) It's really... disorienting, for lack of the correct word, to be here in Bremerton again one year later.  It's getting sunnier and sunnier, and especially when I'm emailing at the library, which is in my old area, I just feel like I'm right where I was. So much has changed, and so much has not.  I try not to think about it too much.  But I still think about it too much.
(Unrelated note, I just banged my leg into the wooden table thing, It hurts and is very distracting)
Anyway, I learned a lot this time in the temple.  The spirit is so strong, you can't help but learn.  I was thinking how much I wished I could have a pen and my planner so I could write down things I was learning while I was there- but then I realized that, once again, Heavenly Father is smarter than I am.
( Heavenly Father- A Kazillion, Elder Lonas- 0)
While it's definitely a good idea to go home and write down impressions and stuff, I think that it's part of Heavenly Father's plan to have us not be able to write stuff down, because that means that if I want to learn everything he wants to teach me, I need to go frequently, for the rest of my life.  There's no shortcut or other way to do it.
I won't be able to go to the temple again until I'm coming home... that really scares me.  I feel like Im starting to do things for the last time.  Last temple trip, last phone call home....
I've been staring at this computer screen for about 10 minute straight, it's so hard for me to try to convey things sometimes.
Ooh, let me tell you about Tyler! (short version, not long version)
He came to church this week! we met him last Sunday, after church, so this is the first week he could make it.  He's way legit. In Church, he introduced himself as "Tyler, Candidate for Baptism! And these are my missionaries, they're my escorts today!"
Pretty awesome :) He's in his 50's, and came to church looking way classy in black slacks, black tie and suspenders.
I just think that's awesome.  :)  He's going to be baptized in a few weeks, I'm really excited for him!
Life is wonderful.  Missionaries are so happy, because sharing the gospel makes me everyone happy! And being a full time missionary makes me full time happy.  The cool thing is that we're the FULL TIME missionaries! which means that everyone else who has been baptized is ALSO A MISSIONARY :) I promise everyone of you that if you are bold, and invite someone to come closer to Christ this week, through reading the Book of Mormon, or coming to church with you, or meeting with the full time missionaries, you will know exactly what I'm talking about. John 7:17
Love,
Lonas
